Knowing who you're really talking to can help protect you from fraudsters who impersonate trusted organizations and their staff such as Solicitors, Banks or the Police.

Whilst fraud and scams aren't new, fraudsters are always trying new ways to steal your money.

We've included some common scams below where fraudsters pretend to be someone they're not - along with what to look out for to spot the signs of a scam.

Commonly, fraudsters will contact you pretending to be from your bank.
But, they've now extended the pretense acting like the contact is someone or an organization they know you normally trust - Family, Friends, Solicilotrs, Accountant, Amazon, etc.

They'll tell you it's about a problem on your account or your login and they need your help to resolve it.

What they are really trying to achieve is get you to provide your sensitive information which you use to access your account or give you their own account to make payment to them without you knowing.

Download Software - we will never ask you to download software on your phone or computer e.g, to allow for screen sharing, link text messages to your device or set up a call divert to another phone number.

Disclose Authentication Codes - these codes are received by text messages or generated using your secure key. We will never ask you for them - they're personal to you and only used to make payments or changes to your online account, if you happen to have such an account with us.

Make a payment - if there is a problem on your account, we will never ask you to provide access to your bank account, device or make a payment to a alternate safe account.

Fraudsters love calling and pretending to be the Police, Utilities Providers or a Government agency.

They might ask for your help with an investigation, or claim you owe money for an unpaid debt. And if you don't think you owe anything then help them to remove the charges

They might also say the effort to contact you is to make their system work better for you going forwards. However, to do this, they must correct previous errors due to new consumer laws and refund previous charges back to your account.

Scammers Unexpected request - If you weren't expecting it, hang up the call, then:

(1) Call back using a trusted phone number to the company or agency they said they are from e.g, get the number from the official website.

(2) Use a different phone to call so the fraudster can't intercept your call.

Scammers Panic Tactics - scammers make things seem urgent or dangerous to convince you to act quickly. You should Stop and Think clearly - assessing the situation calmly before doing anything will stop you from doing something you wouldn't normally do.

Scammers Ask For Personal or Financial Details - any request for sensitive information should be treated with caution. No-one should ask you for details about your online banking, cards, bank accounts or bank statements.

DO NOT PAY MONEY TO ANY ALTERNATE BANK ACCOUNT YOU DO NOT KNOW.
